Kitchen Knife
Kitchen Knife is a series of 10 painted sculptures which addresses the violence affecting the lives of many women. The series follows upon concerns addressed in previous works regarding the inequalities and injustices faced by women. Kitchen Knife addresses the violence which affects the lives of many women and the series raises questions about the cruelty encountered by many women living throughout the world.
In this body of work, the kitchen knife is employed as a metaphor. Additionally, the object draws upon the potential of its own inherent danger in situations of domestic violence. The knives’ have been transformed by taking them out of the kitchen, bringing them into a new context and giving them a new meaning and function. My choice of material is inspired by what we usually associate with women and domestic spaces. A variety of cut wallpapers have been used; painted upon with floral designs and decorated with crochet loops.
